What schema markup does

Schema markup is structured data added to your website’s code that communicates directly with search engines and AI systems. Where a human reading your homepage understands that you’re a marketing agency in Beirut, a search engine reading raw HTML has to infer that from your page text.

Schema removes the guesswork. It says, in a format the search engine reads directly: this is an organization, this is the name, this is the service area, these are the services offered, this is the address, this is the phone number. It is the difference between Google understanding your entity and Google guessing at it.

The schema types Lebanon businesses need most

Organization or LocalBusiness schema is the foundation. It establishes your business as an entity with a name, address, contact information, and service description. For businesses serving a specific geographic area, LocalBusiness with the correct schema.org subtype, such as ProfessionalService for agencies or MedicalBusiness for clinics, provides more precise entity definition.

FAQPage schema is the most direct route to AI Overview citations. If your page has a questions-and-answers section, FAQPage schema marks up each question and answer pair explicitly. Google and other AI engines pull directly from FAQPage-marked content when generating answers.

Service schema maps each of your service offerings as distinct entities connected to your organization. This is what allows Google to understand that you offer “technical SEO” and “AI search optimization” as separate, identifiable services, not just keywords mentioned in your page text.

BreadcrumbList schema matters for ecommerce and multi-page sites. It tells Google the logical hierarchy of your site, which improves crawling efficiency and can generate breadcrumb navigation in search results.

What correct implementation looks like

Schema should be implemented as JSON-LD in the head section of your pages, not as inline microdata mixed into your HTML. JSON-LD is Google’s recommended format and is significantly easier to maintain and update.

The schema should be validated against Google’s Rich Results Test before deployment. Errors in schema don’t just fail silently. They can produce incorrect entity signals that actively work against your visibility.

For businesses with multiple service pages, the schema @graph format is the correct approach. A @graph connects your organization entity, your website entity, your individual pages, and your services as a linked network of entities. This is the format that most closely matches how Google’s Knowledge Graph represents businesses internally.

The implementation gap in Lebanon

Most SEO audits in Lebanon recommend schema as a checklist item. The recommendation is usually something like “add schema markup to your homepage and service pages.” What it doesn’t cover is which schema types, which fields, whether the implementation should be page-level or site-level, and whether the specific values in the schema match the entity signals elsewhere on the web.

Schema done halfway, or incorrectly, can be worse than no schema. An @type that doesn’t match your actual business category, schema that contradicts your Google Business Profile, or FAQPage schema with answers that don’t appear anywhere in your visible page content are all signals that can reduce rather than improve your entity confidence.
